Supporting adult literacy initiatives in Madison County, Indiana.
…so that all can read, we provide one-on-one tutoring and small classroom learning. MCLC strives to enable adults who struggle with literacy to gain the skills they need to find employment and economic opportunities, and thrive as confident, contributing members of society.
Tutoring Services
The Madison County Literacy Center offers reading assistance to English-speaking adults who live in the county. The Literacy Center is the office of the Madison County Literacy Coalition. It is located near downtown Anderson at the corner of W 8th Street and Morton Street.
Each learner receives instruction based on their personal literacy skills which are assessed upon entering the program and at regular intervals. Adult literacy workbooks are used, focusing on adult interests, reading levels, and learning styles, as they strive to achieve their personal literacy goals.
All tutor/learner pairs are expected to meet for an hour of instruction one or two days each week in private classrooms at the Literacy Center or at a convenient public location in their community. Tutors have access to teaching aids and educational materials designed for the specific needs of adult literacy learners.

For over fourteen years the Coalition has generated financial support for its programs by operating a bookstore.
At the Book Nook thousands of gently used books are available. The variety of books includes titles from all genres for readers of all ages. All of the books, from current bestsellers to vintage classics, have been donated or traded.

"Reading has taken me on many adventures in time, in space, across the world. Teaching someone else to read is one of the most satisfying things I have done in my nearly 80 years."
David, MCLC Tutor
Literacy is the basis of all learning. We learn to read to read to learn.
That said, there are approximately 46 million adults in the United States who read at a third grade level. That is one out of every five adults. It is estimated that in Madison County alone, 17,000 adults cannot read above a third grade level. Studies show that children of non-reading parents perform academically at a lower level than those whose parents are readers. This is a perpetuating cycle with ever-growing negative numbers. The economic cost of illiteracy is in the trillions of dollars, including lost productivity, health costs, incarceration and recidivism.
